Cultural and heritage conservation, among all heated topics in the arts domain, is seen as the lodestone igniting attention and lively discussion on how one nation or institution can achieve comprehensive preservation of its indigenous culture. And to that end, we see the necessity to formulate cultural conservation strategy having regard to other established experience.


Over the years, Youth Square has been conducting exchange and cultural immersion programmes to consolidate youngsters’ knowledge of the glorious old-age charm of the garrison town of Dunhuang. To avail close encounter with the profound and erudite Dunhuang, an oasis carrying vital cultural and historical significance in the passage of Silk Road, our new initiative this year is now recruiting students admitted to Tertiary education as young leaders to embark on a cultural and heritage Internship Programme in Dunhuang. The purpose of this programme is to provide new impetus for action to promote arts appreciation, cultural conservation, arts education and socio-enlightenment. The programme will offer 15 places for application.


The programme serves as a weeks-long internship opportunity, covering tours to Dunhuang caves in Gansu, shadowing on mural painting, clay figure, animation rendition, digitization of data pertaining to the conservation of caves and environmental preservation. Led by esteemed scholars from Dunhuang, workshop, site-visit, exchange and research will also expose young leaders to the different aspects on arts, culture, history, folklore and natural science of Dunhuang.

Internship Period: 8 July to 18 August 2018 ( Six-week)

Target: A permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region aged 18 to 29 and are currently admitted to local tertiary education e.g: Visual Arts, Visual Design, Fashion Design, Textiles and Clothing, Environmental Science, humanity and Social Science, Chinese Language and History, Music, New Media, Geography and Tourism.
Internship Place: 15 
Fee and Deposit:
- Fee: The cost of transportation, accommodation, basic travel insurance and exchange fee of each successful candidate will be sponsored by organizer.
- Successful candidates are required to pay a programme fee deposit of $2,000 via cheque and made payable to “New World Facilities Mangagement Company Limited”. A full refund of the deposit will be made upon completion of programme, attendance to post-tour activities and submission of programme report.    

Briefing Session: 
Former “Art and Culture Ambassadors” who have conducted field-study in Dunhuang will share their precious experience and learning outcomes. Itinerary and content of the Internship programme will also be given out.

Regulations and Points to Note:
1. Youth aged 18 to 29 and are currently admitted to local tertiary education.
2. Successful Candidate must hold a valid Hong Kong Identity Card and a Mainland Travel Permit / travel document.
3. Successful Candidate must complete the whole Internship Programme.
4. Successful Candidate shall ensure they have good health to accommodate local weather changes. Youth Square reserves the right to ask the participants to provide proof of good health before departure if necessary.
5. All the submission after application deadline is not accepted. All the submission and related materials will not be returned and revised.
6. Youth Square is granted the copy rights of all materials submitted to use, reproduce and publish for educational and non-profit making purposes.   
7. Participants should respect the decision of the judging panel and raise no objection to the judging panel’s decision.       
8. Youth Square reserves the right to alter the details of the internship programme. Should there be any dispute, the decision of Youth Square should be final.

1. Submit this online application form (please complete and submit this MS Word file directly).
2. A passport photo (in e-format).
3. Choose your priority of Internship Position (refer to application form) and explain in no more than 50 words (punctuation inclusive).
4. A self-introduction detailing your expectation of this internship programme (in Chinese, no more than 200 words (punctuation inclusive))
5. Submit an artwork of your impression of Dunhuang Culture (including but not limited to drawing, model, handicraft, photos and video clip etc.) together with a 200-word description. If the artwork is an actual object, a photo of the artwork is also accepted.   
Activity Report and Sharing Session:
Successful Candidate must submit the activity report within a month after the completion of trip. The submission includes:
1. A written 100 to 200-word article (in Chinese, punctuation inclusive) of activity feedback.
2. More than 30pcs of trip photos. The size of each photo must not be smaller than 1MB. 
3. Successful Candidate will have to join the sharing session and share the learning outcome after the trip.
